The certificates in computer gaming helps college students become more marketable to employers in the gaming trade by including this specialization to complement their major program of research. The aim of this chapter is to spotlight the gender divide with regard to play styles and recreation preferences. The chapter considers how gender differences in relation to play and preferences reinforce and perpetuate the view that computer video games are a male domain and a predominantly male spare time activity. Additionally, the authors focus on what makes ladies, and girls play in one other way and in what ways the genders differ and why this may be. The chapter also discusses the view of masculinity as the dominant ideology of play within the recreation industry, with female play seen as “other,” trivialised and marginalised by the mainstream industry.
